Devotional
1 Peter 5:7
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”
Mental Health Insight – There are so many times in our lives where we find ourselves carrying more than we need too. We become consumed with trying to manage all our anxieties and worries all on our own. They start to take up more time in our mind than God does. Then once we start to recognize how our focus has been shifted from our Heavenly Father to the concerns of this life, shame, anger, depression, etc starts to consume our identity. However, we have the opportunity to welcome God into this moment despite whatever thoughts are racing throughout our brain. The following reflection prompts will help give you the opportunity to cast your anxiety onto the Lord, and allow Him to care for you the way you deserve and need.
Reflection Questions:
What are the top three “weights” on your shoulders right now? List them out specifically.
How does it feel to name them instead of letting them swirl around as vague stress?
The Greek word for “cast” implies a deliberate throw (like throwing a blanket over a pack animal). Are you truly throwing your worries onto Him, or are you just showing them to Him and then picking them back up?
What makes it hard for you to trust that God “cares for you” in your specific situation?
Look back at a time in your life when a major anxiety was resolved. How did God show His care for you then? How can that memory fuel your trust today?
Prayer: Dear God, I am feeling overwhelmed and tired of carrying my worries alone. Right now, I choose to hand them all over to You. Thank You for loving me and for promising to carry my heavy burdens. Help me to trust Your heart and rest in Your peace today. Amen.

Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ For Sinners and Suffers by Dane Ortlund
Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund is a deep dive into the heart of Jesus, specifically focusing on His self-description in Matthew 11:28-30. Rather than focusing on Christ’s duties or doctrines, Ortlund explores how Jesus feels toward his followers, emphasizing that He is naturally drawn to those who are struggling, failing, or suffering. Drawing heavily on the insights of 17th-century Puritans, the book aims to comfort readers by showing that God’s heart is not one of frustration or distance, but of infinite compassion and “gentle” affection for the weary.
