365 Mental Health Devotional Challenge: Day 107

Devotional

Yesterday we learned about the “Freeze” response in our Fight, Flight, Freeze response within our nervous system! Today, we will be learning an educational coping tool to help combat the “Freeze” response! When our nervous system feels stuck, simple Micro-Actions can help our brain realize there is a way to move forward safely. So let’s get to learning!

Psalm 119:105
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

Educational Coping Skill: The “Two-Minute Micro-Action”

When the nervous system feels paralyzed, due to the “freeze” response, getting back in the groove of things can feel like trying to run a marathon. Looking at the long to-do list will only make the “freeze” response worse, as the brain perceives the large amount of tasks as a threat. To safely unthaw from this frozen state, you can use a specific coping skill called the Two-Minute Micro-Action.

Step 1: Shrink the Goal Look at your situation and pick one single task that takes two minutes or less to complete. Do not look at the long to-do list, but rather just look at one thing that is easily achievable. This could be putting your shoes on, washing one single plate, or opening a window to let fresh air in.

Step 2: Remove the “Finish Line” Pressure. Give yourself full permission to stop after those two minutes are up. You do not have to clean the whole kitchen, you only have to wash one plate. By removing the pressure of finishing the entire job, you lower the brain’s defense walls.

Step 3: Make the Physical Movement! Complete the two-minute task. This small physical movement acts like a reset button for your nervous system. It sends a clear, biological signal to your brain that you are safe, capable, and no longer trapped, making it much easier to take the next step.

Faith Connection

When times get tough we can often find ourselves begging God to see the bigger picture. We want to see everything planned out and going into things blind can not only be overwhelming but down right terrifying at times. However, just as in Psalm 119:105 God oftentimes only shows us where we need to step in that moment. Unlike the high powered flash lights that we have today, a lamp in the biblical times only showed a few steps ahead. The same goes for God. Oftentimes we are walking the path God set in front of us and we have no idea where it is going. Despite not being able to see the full picture we can trust that God has that path set in front of us for a reason. It is a daring act of faith to keep moving forward. Moving forward doesn’t have to be a huge achievement either. In reality, it is often just a Micro-Action, and placing our faith in God that He has the perfect way lined up.

Reflection Question

When you feel entirely frozen by a big problem what is one two minute micro action you can take right now to step into the light God has given you

Prayer

Dear God, when I look at the big picture of my life, I often feel overwhelmed and completely frozen. I confess that I want a floodlight to see the future, but You have promised to be a lamp for my feet. Help me to stop worrying about the finish line and just focus on the next small step. Give me the courage to take a tiny action today, trusting that You are guiding my path. Amen.
