Devotional

Hebrews 4:16
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence.”

Mental Health Insight – When one feels as if they must be perfect or low maintenance in order to be accepted by others, they could display an Avoidant Attachment style. When anxiety and depression starts to creep in, it compounds those feelings of “avoid until I’m less trouble for others”. A way to combat this is Radical Authenticity, which asks the individual to show up in times they need support despite feeling like a burden. Allowing oneself to show up for oneself in a time of need allows the brain to challenge the idea that they are a burden.

Faith Connection – In early human history, approaching a king’s throne was absolutely terrifying, However Hebrews 4:16 paints a different picture, showing that approaching God doesn’t bring rejection but instead brings GRACE! God understands we live in a fallen world, and absolutely understands our transgressions. But even knowing this He openly welcomes us with open arms, not wanting us to wait for the right time but rather desperately urging us to run towards Him. We can approach God with confidence in our true authentic self.

Reflection Questions: Do I feel like I have to “clean up” my thoughts before I pray? How does “approaching with confidence” change that?

Prayer Dear God, thank You that Your door is always open. Thank You that I don’t have to be strong to be welcomed by You. Give me the confidence to bring my mess, my anxiety, and my needs directly to Your throne today. Help me to receive Your mercy and to rest in the belonging You’ve already given me. Amen

Book Recommendations: I have received a few inquiries from individuals asking to get more information surrounding the devotional topics! If you are interested in learning more about today’s topic I have a great book recommendation below.

Attached to God: Krispin Mayfield

Description: Licensed professional counselor Krispin Mayfield applies attachment theory to the spiritual life, explaining how our early relationships shape how we approach God. He specifically addresses the avoidant style where people feel they must be low maintenance or “perfect” to stay in God’s good graces. The book provides a roadmap for moving from a performance based relationship to one of secure attachment. By practicing radical authenticity and bringing your true self to the “throne of grace,” you can challenge the brain’s fear of being a burden. It offers practical exercises to help you feel safe enough to stop hiding and start experiencing the consistent, welcoming presence of God.

  1. I do feel like I have to have it all together to pray. I am trying to just talk to him all day long, hoping that will give me confidence to continue approaching Him.

  2. I love the prayer. Knowing that we don’t have to be put all together to be welcomed into God’s throne. We can still be a mess and pray to God..

  3. I honestly loved this. And needed this. I feel like I need to be strong for god when in reality I just need god presence no matter whether I’m falling apart or standing tall.

  4. This reading helped me to understand that no matter what I may be dealing with, even mentally, that I can still confidently come to Christ and ask him to help me with those things

  5. You know I always miss time with GOD because I have to clean first and then it snowballs into other responsibilities. GOD doesn’t care if I take my only free time to spend with HIM instead of cleaning. The mess will parish with the rest of the world but our relationship shall last forevermore.

  6. Such a good thing to remember that we can NEVER be separated from the lords LOVE 🤍🙏✨️
