Devotional

Romans 5:8
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Mental Health Insight – In therapy, developing a secure attachment is the ultimate goal for mental and emotional wellbeing. A secure attachment is the gold standard because it allows the nervous system to relax and not view every mistake as a threat or attack.  You are able to be comfortable with intimacy. You do not struggle with a constant fear of abandonment, and don’t view conflicts as an attack on your own identity. Many of us develop anxious and avoidant attachment styles from our early childhood, causing us to struggle mentally and emotionally. Despite this, we have learned one can earn a secure attachment through developing healthy core values, relationships, and internalizing God’s unconditional love, we can rewire our brain to feel that security it desires.

Faith Connection – Romans 5:8 displays the foundation of a secure attachment with our Heavenly Father. This verse shows us, despite our hardships and transgressions, God will always choose to love us. We will never have to earn our love with Christ as it is so freely given. God never wants us to worry or be consumed with anxiety questioning whether or not we will be accepted by God. Oh no no no! We do not have to live in fear thinking anything could possibly pull us away from our Holy Father. His devotion and love for His children is fixed on truth and reality, that does not fluctuate with our emotions.

Reflection Questions: In what areas of my life am I acting like I have to ‘earn’ my way into being loved? How would it feel to believe that God is already ‘securely attached’ to me, regardless of how I feel today?

Prayer Dear God, thank You for being the ultimate source of security. I confess that I often try to perform to feel worthy of Your love or the love of others. Today, I lean into the truth of Romans 5:8. Help me to develop a sense of security in my soul by trusting that You chose me at my lowest. Calm my heart and help me rest in the safety of Your presence. Amen
