Devotional
Revelation 21:5
“Behold, I am making all things new.”
Mental Health Insight – There are seasons in our life where we feel stuck. Stuck in old patterns, behaviors, or trauma, and our nervous system is in dire need of a reset. When our nervous system feels trapped, anxiety, depression, and intrusive thoughts can all feel consuming. However, we have the capability to renew our nervous system through grounding and somatic training. One grounding exercise we can utilize when we feel our nervous system needs a reset is the 5 Senses Grounding Exercise.
Here is how to do it! Slowly identify the following in your environment:
- 5 things you SEE (e.g., a pen, a jacket, a leaf)
- 4 things you can TOUCH (e.g., your shirt, your skin, the chair)
- 3 things you HEAR (e.g., a fan, a bird, traffic)
- 2 things you can SMELL (e.g., coffee, the air, perfume)
- 1 thing you can TASTE (e.g., toothpaste, water, or a mint)
Faith Connection – There is no way to avoid the stress and overwhelming moments of this life. Nonetheless we have the capability to step out of whatever is consuming us in those moments and step into God’s peace by bringing ourselves back to the present moment. Finding moments to ground ourselves regardless of the difficulty in the moment can be a beautiful act of fatih toward our Heavenly Father.
Reflection Question: How can practicing this grounding skill help me stop focusing on my past mistakes and start noticing the new ways God is working in my life today?
Prayer: Dear God, I thank You that You are making me new right now. When my mind feels stuck in old thoughts and my body feels trapped by anxiety, help me use my senses to return to the present moment. I choose to let go of what is behind me and focus on the life You are giving me today. Amen.
Further Resources
Many of you have been asking for further resources that could potentially benefit you on your mental health journey. Below I have attached a book you might find beneficial surrounding this topic
The Body Keeps the Score: Bessel van der Kolk, MD
Description: Dr. Bessel van der Kolk explains how stress and trauma physically reshape the brain and body, often leaving the nervous system stuck in survival mode. He highlights why talk therapy alone isn’t always enough and introduces somatic and grounding techniques to help the body process the past. By using these tools to reset the nervous system, readers can find a path out of old patterns and toward physical and emotional restoration. This book provides the scientific foundation for how we can move from being stuck in our history to experiencing the newness promised in Revelation 21:5.
