Jeremiah 31:3
“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”
Mental Health Insight – DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is a widely used form of talk therapy, specifically designed to help individuals with intense emotions. One of the core tools used in DBT is “Radical Acceptance”. When we feel as if we are in the middle of an intense storm in life, “Radical Acceptance” helps one to accept the circumstances of our reality without judgment or bitterness. Radical Acceptance is not blind ignorance or acceptance, but rather the ability to accept reality for what it is and stop fighting it. This allows one to focus on what is true, without the influence of one’s current situation or emotions. When we fight against accepting our own reality, it causes our body to be put in a state of stress, prolonging the suffering. Radical acceptance allows one to finally understand the difference between unavoidable pain and unavoidable suffering, helping one live the most fulfilled life, despite its circumstances.
Faith Connection – In Jeremiah 31:3 we can see God displaying radical acceptance to His people who have been struggling in exile. At this point in scripture, we see the intense suffering and hardships due to their own poor choices and wrong doings. Despite their current suffering, God does not wait to show them the reality of His love. Instead, He declares truth over their lives stating “I have loved you with an everlasting love…”. God’s love is not swayed but the storms of our lives. Despite our transgressions and the consequences they might bring, the Israelites have a moment of radical acceptance. They have the opportunity to allow God’s love to be accepted and not influenced by life’s current difficulties. By practicing radical acceptance in our own lives we can align with God’s truths, without having the present moment influence us. This allows us to accept our current moment, even if it is a direct cause of past transgressions, while also realizing our identity is founded in Christ not the present situation.
Reflection Questions: Is there a struggle in my life right now that I am judging myself for? How would it change my stress level to radically accept “this is where I am” while also knowing I am “everlastingly loved”?
Prayer Dear God, I confess that I often spend my energy fighting my reality or drowning in the shame of my own mistakes. Thank You for the example of the Israelites. Even when I am in a storm of my own making, Your love remains everlasting. Help me to practice Radical Acceptance today. Give me the courage to see my life as it truly is, without judgment, so that I can finally feel You drawing me forward with Your unfailing kindness. I trade my striving for Your peace. Amen.
Book Recommendations
I have received a few inquiries from individuals asking to get more information surrounding the devotional topics! If you are interested in learning more about DBT from a God honoring Christian lens I have a great book for you!
Building a Life Worth Living: Marsha M. Linehan, PhD
Description: Written by the actual creator of DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), this memoir and guide explain Radical Acceptance through a deeply personal lens. Dr. Linehan shares her own journey of intense emotional suffering and how she discovered that fighting reality only creates more pain. She breaks down how to accept life as it is, without judgment, to finally move toward change. This book helps readers understand that accepting a difficult moment isn’t the same as liking it. Rather, it is the key to experiencing God’s “unfailing kindness” in the middle of the mess. It is an inspiring and practical read for anyone who wants to stop the cycle of self-judgment and start living a life grounded in truth.

I have practiced radical acceptance (an incredibly useful tool, by the way!) on nearly every area of my life save one — my weight loss journey. Your post and reflection questions made me realize that this is one area where I really need to accept God’s love and apply it to my thinking about myself and my body. I need to love myself where I’m at and also use that love (combined with God’s amazing love!) to fuel my desire for better health!
Thank you for this post! 🙏
