Psalm 147:11
“The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”

Mental Health Insight – Understanding Social Anxiety can be difficult with the significant amount of misleading information online. However, in psychology Social Anxiety can be understood from an educational perspective as something significantly more than everyday shyness. Instead, Social Anxiety is identified as the persistent fear of being observed, judged, or negatively evaluated by those around them. This means that an individual’s brain who is struggling with this condition has identified social interactions as a serious threat, causing the nervous system to be activated during socialization. The brain is anticipating rejection, making one hyperaware of any flaws, embarrassing mistake, or awkward moment could result in being rejected by one’s peers. This results in the brain identifying potential embarrassing social interactions as a serious threat, causing immense exhaustion from constantly trying to perfectly manage how one is perceived by the outside world.

Faith Connection – Living in fear of anticipating human rejection can be exhausting. However, Psalm 147:11 is a reminder that we can live in peace knowing that Christ has never rejected us and welcomes us to a relationship with Him. No matter how messy, silly, flawed, or awkward we may be, we can find safety and peace knowing the Holy Father still chooses us! God’s love is unfailing! Meaning no matter what we may be struggling with His perfect love does not waver or change, as it is forever constant. As we as individuals put the weight of their identity in God’s unfailing love rather than the wavering opinions of peers, it slowly begins to quiet the overwhelming fear of human judgment. We can rest in the truth that the Creator already accepts and delights in you and provides a secure foundation that social perfectionism is simply unnecessary.

Reflection Question: How might reminding yourself that God already chose you, change the posture of your heart as you interact with others today?

Prayer: Dear God, I confess that my mind often races with the fear of what others think of me. I can easily exhaust my nervous system trying to perform perfectly just to secure human approval and avoid rejection. Thank You that Your love is entirely different. Thank You that it is unfailing and does not depend on my ability to manage how I am perceived. Help me to anchor my identity in the beautiful truth that You delight in me. Quiet the fear of human judgment in my mind, and replace it with a deep, resting hope in Your perfect acceptance. Amen.

  1. Knowing God chose me specifically makes me feel chosen, valued and a part of something way bigger than myself. It shows Gods ultimate glory and grace- building me in his image, it is humbling and I’m in awe. This grace he has given gives us a chance to show others that they to were made for a purpose and specifically chosen and in His image.
