Today, we are taking an educational dive into the reality of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and the intense anxiety behind unwanted intrusive thoughts. In today’s devotional, we are going to explore the science behind your brain’s ‘false alarms’ and learn how OCD impacts individuals.

Mental Health Insight – When thinking about Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD often one will envision the Hollywood description of the disorder, which is often viewed as excessive cleanliness. In reality, OCD is more than cleanliness and order. OCD is a neurobiological cycle of intrusive, repetitive, distressing thoughts or doubts that cause an individual to fixate and obsess. This is due to the brain’s error-detection system (the anterior cingulate cortex) becomes overactive, sending out a “false alarm” activating the nervous system making one believe they are in danger.
Faith Connection – For those struggling with unwanted intrusive thoughts or even OCD, 2 Timothy 1:17 is a spiritual anchor to ground ourselves in the love and peace of Christ, despite our brain overwhelming us. As a Christian, having a sound mind does not mean we are free from unwanted thoughts. Instead, it means that we ground our minds in the love of Christ despite how overwhelming our thoughts can be. We can easily get caught up believing we are a spiritual failure when the “what-ifs” feel like an endless loop. However, having a “sound mind” means having the capacity to recognize that a fearful thought is just a thought and does not mean you are failing at life or with God. So if you are struggling with intrusive thoughts or even OCD, know that you are not failing and God will be proud of you for reaching out for help.
Reflection Question: When a repetitive doubt or “sticky” thought makes you feel like you are losing your peace, can you practice viewing that thought as a “false alarm” from your nervous system rather than a message you must solve or obey today?
Prayer: Dear God, I thank You that You are the author of peace and a sound mind. I confess that my thoughts often feel like an exhausting loop I cannot escape, and the urge to find perfect certainty can be overwhelming. Thank You for being my secure foundation when my mind feels loud. Help me to distinguish between Your steady voice and the ‘false alarms’ of my anxiety. Give me the strength to rest in Your love today, even when my thoughts feel sticky. Amen.

While I do not have OCD, with C-PTSD, I do have intrusive thoughts and irrational fears. I have learned to shut down those thoughts. When anxiety/fear presents itself in a situation where I know it is a “false alarm,” I am now able to remind myself that I am safe and secure, especially in God’s hands!

I have been here from the beginning. I liked the ones on grief since that is the journey I am on right now. I don’t have OCD but do have ADD which is just as bad.

I can try to focus on God instead of my thoughts, sometimes my mind takes me to the extremes and I get so overwhelmed and stressed but if I take a moment to focus on God and remind myself that it’s just a thought and not the end I’m sure I can conquer anything with God leading the way!
