Devotional
John 14:27
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Mental Health Insight – Many individuals will start Somatic therapy to focus on their mind and body connection. Somatic therapy points out that anxiety is not just a sensation, thought, emotion we feel, but rather a deep physical response stored in our nervous system. So when we become stressed or overwhelmed, our nervous system quickly enters the fight, flight, freeze, or fawn response. Somatic therapy explores how true peace isn’t just happy thoughts. Rather it is about having a regulated nervous system where the body truly feels safe. Somatic therapy focuses on that mind and body connects to help return the nervous system back to its original state. We cannot simply think our way out of anxiety and trauma, as we must sometimes help our bodies physically experience safety.
Faith Connection – In John 14:27 we can see Christ preparing His disciples for a very troubling time in the coming future. However, Christ is a profound gift, His peace and comfort. Unlike the world, the peace Christ gives is perfect and does not need to be earned. The peace Christ gives is the anchor that keeps us sane in the crazy world. We cannot avoid all of life’s difficulties and challenges, but we can actively choose to let God be our anchor when those difficulties arise. When we choose to slow down our breathing, unclench our fists, and take a moment to reflect with the Lord we are actively choosing to connect our Mind, Body, AND Soul with the Heavenly Father to obtain true peace and help regulate our nervous system!
Reflection Question: Take a moment to do a gentle scan of your body. Where are you currently holding physical tension (your neck, your jaw, your stomach)? How might intentionally relaxing that specific part of your body serve as an act of surrender to God’s peace today?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of Your peace, a peace that surpasses all worldly understanding. I confess that sometimes my mind races and my body feels overwhelmed by the stresses of life. Help me to remember that You designed my body and that You care about my physical tension just as much as my anxious thoughts. Teach me to pause, breathe, and physically receive the rest You offer. Holy Spirit, calm my nervous system and anchor my heart in Your unfailing love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Book Recommendations
This book bridges the gap between theology and the hard science of trauma, specifically detailing how the body and nervous system respond to stress and how counselors integrate that into faith-based care.
Dives deeper into the actual mechanics of the nervous system and introduces the concept of “situational strength.” It is highly educational regarding how to build somatic resilience while keeping Christ at the center of the healing journey.
Dr. McBride is a clinical psychologist who directly addresses the “mind-body split” that is often inadvertently taught in some Christian circles. This book is a profound educational resource on why our bodies are not just vessels to be ignored, but divinely created parts of our spiritual experience.

I enjoyed reading this. I often hear about anxious thoughts and things like that, but I really like the mention of the physical part of that as well because although it is important, it seems to go unnoticed and unchecked so often.
I am so glad at the beginning you posted the flight or fight response! In nursing school we’re told about fight or flight. However I have always froze during all my trauma experiences! It started during an earthquake when I was a kid and I just froze and stood there. It’s no wonder I’m even still alive tbh, every scary scenario I just freeze, there is no fight or no flight I just don’t react. My body tenses, my breathing shallows and I just panic in a frozen state. I am so glad now that I love God and depend on him and rely on him and trust him. That has helped me sooo much! I know I say that a lot but trusting in him and relying on him has strengthened my faith, and calmed my anxiety!
I really took in all that was said. I hold a lot of tension in my neck which sometimes triggers my migraines 😭. I keep John 14:27 with me whenever I need God’s peace
I never think about the physical qualities of anxiety. This was a good reminder to let go of all of it, not just the mental aspect.
