Psalm 66:10
“For you, God, tested us; you refined us like silver.”
Educational Coping Skill: The “Notice and Name” Reset
Whenever we experience difficult times, our emotions and thoughts can become loud and overwhelming. It can feel as if stress is taking over our lives and identity. One can combat this by utilizing an educational tool called Notice and Name. This tool helps the individual move from a heightened emotional state into a logical framework of thinking, naturally lowering intense emotions.
Step 1: Notice the Feeling Stop for a moment and pay attention to what is happening in your body and mind. Instead of saying, “I am stressed,” try to describe the specific feeling as if you are looking at it from the outside. For example: “I notice that my heart is beating fast,” or “I notice that I am having a lot of worried thoughts right now.”
Step 2: Name the Feeling Give the emotion a simple label. Is it “Sadness”? “Fear”? “Frustration”? By giving the feeling a name, you are telling your brain exactly what it is dealing with. This simple act helps the logical part of your brain stay in control so you don’t feel like the emotion is “swallowing” you.
Step 3: Breathe and Acknowledge Take one slow breath. Remind yourself that even though the feeling is strong, it is just one part of your experience right now. Tell yourself: “I am feeling this, but I am still safe, and this feeling will not last forever.”
Faith Connection – When silver is refined it is melted down so the impurities that do not belong are removed, leaving the purest form of the metal. When we face tests throughout this life, our hidden fears and emotions come to the surface. This can feel overwhelming and even messy as we have been hiding these fears and emotions for a reason. However, we know throughout this life that God is constantly refining and guiding us, no matter the situation or emotion. And although we may want to hide these things, we can trust that God can help guide us through them. This life is a long sanctification process where God is guiding us through different experiences and obstacles, showing us the best way. Thankfully we can find peace in knowing that despite what we are struggling with, God will never leave our side. In fact, He wants to walk with us during these moments. We don’t need to hide our stress and struggles, pretending it is not there. Instead, God welcomes us to bring them to Him.
Reflection Question: If you were to “Notice and Name” your main feeling right now, what would it be? How does it feel to simply name it and remember that God is sitting with you in that feeling?
Prayer: Dear God, thank You for being with me in this testing season. I confess that I often feel overwhelmed by my emotions. Help me to slow down and name what I am feeling instead of letting it take over. Thank You for being the Master Refiner who never leaves my side. I trust that You are making me stronger and more like You every day. Amen.

I find that naming my emotions versus “calling myself” my emotions has been a huge help. I AM not anxious. I FEEL anxious. I AM a child of God, held safely in His hands. It is amazing what changing your self talk can do for your overall feeling of well-being!
The feeling I’m feeling is peace mostly because I just read your blog that said take a deep breath and immediately I did and honestly it felt better and helped me. Sometimes i forget to just “breath” in life. I’m always so worried about this and that until my body gets frustrated. It’s nice to take a breather. And think of all God is capable of and how in the blog we have many obstacles in life but he is beside us in everyone! Which is sooo comforting
So proud of you!
