Proverbs 4:23
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Mental Health Insight – Studies show that whatever we actively focus on, shapes our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs about ourselves. We have the ability to guard our minds against high levels of anxiety, stress, depression, etc. When we actively focus on the positive we protect our brain from overwhelming the Amygdala, which is responsible for our stress and fear responses. The results? By actively protecting your inner peace, supports your overall mental and emotional wellbeing.
Faith Connection – When you follow God Proverbs 4:23 you aren’t just following His commandments, you’re protecting your peace. He never wanted you to spend each day overwhelmed and anxious. Instead, He programmed our brains to have the power to overcome and conquer even the most difficult of moments. So next time you find yourself consumed with negativity, focus your mind on what is good and worthy in the eyes of God. That way your heart is not carrying burdens it was never intended to, but rather allowing your nervous system to rest in the peace God designed for you
Reflection Question: If you realized your heart was never designed to carry the weight of your “what-ifs,” how would that change what you allow yourself to dwell on today?
Prayer: Dear God, Lord, thank You for being the one who carries the heavy loads so I don’t have to. Help me to be a faithful gatekeeper of my thoughts today, refusing to pick up burdens You never intended for me to carry. I choose to rest in Your strength and guard the peace You have placed in my heart. Amen.
Further Resources
Many of you have been asking for further resources that could potentially benefit you on your mental health journey. Below I have attached a book you might find beneficial surrounding this topic!
Rest for Your Soul: A Bible-Based Guide to Managing Fear and Anxiety Wendy Blight
Description: Wendy Blight takes a very practical, scriptural approach to the “guarding” process. She focuses on the concept of “Hiding God’s Word in your heart” as a shield for your mental health. The book teaches readers how to identify the specific lies that trigger the brain’s fear response and replace them with “God-Truths” that allow the nervous system to return to a state of rest.

Thank you for doing these daily devotionals. I thank God that He sustains you. You are obviously comforted by Him which allows you to comfort others. Personally, we are going through heavy things with my parents not being supportive of our (me & my husband) relationship with God. I cannot save them. Only Jesus can. Now it is trying to figure out where & how to set boundaries. Please pray for us on this as we fully surrender it to God & lay it at the feet of Jesus & stop picking it back up. Thank you.
