What is Christian Meditation?
Psalm 51:10
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
Mental Health Insight – What is mediation? Well meditating simply means to bring attention upon something, to calm one’s mind, and to develop a state of emotional stability. Oftentimes Christians will become confused and question if meditation is biblical. Of course, there are different types of mediation across different faiths, but the general definition of meditation aligns with scripture. So, what does Christian meditation do? Did you know studies show that Christians who have meditated on the love and mercy of Christ, have statistically lower levels of cortisol and stress hormones. By actively practicing on reflecting on the word and goodness of Christ you are practicing Christian mediation. Scripture often tells us to meditate on the word of God, which can be a great tool for your mental health and spiritual journey. Focusing on the deep love and compassion God has to offer us helps our brain transition out of feeling in danger and into safety. God is literally our safe haven!
Faith Connection – God designed us to find stability in His character. He is constantly finding ways to help us in this fallen world. One of the ways He helps us is through how He designed our nervous system. He never intended for His children to struggle on their own, and He is always welcoming us to come to Him with our struggles, hardships, and fears.
Reflection Question: If I viewed my time focusing on God’s love as “medicine” for my nervous system, how would that change the way I start my morning?
Prayer: Dear God, thank You for the way You designed my mind and body to work together. I am amazed that even my biology responds to the truth of Your love and mercy. When I feel overwhelmed and my stress levels rise, help me to find my “safe haven” in You. I ask that You would physically quiet my heart and settle my thoughts as I focus on Your compassion. Thank You for renewing my spirit and giving me the strength to stay steadfast today. Amen.
Further Resources
Many of you have been asking for further resources that could potentially benefit you on your mental health journey. Below I have attached a book you might find beneficial surrounding this topic.
How God Changes Your Brain – Andrew Newberg, M.D., and Mark Robert Waldman
Description: Neuroscientist Andrew Newberg and therapist Mark Robert Waldman present breakthrough research on how spiritual practices physically alter the brain’s structure. They explain that meditating on a loving and compassionate God, rather than a punitive one, strengthens the prefrontal cortex while calming the amygdala. This shift significantly reduces cortisol levels and lowers stress, moving the nervous system from a state of “danger” into a “safe haven.” The book details how just twelve minutes of daily meditation can enhance emotional regulation and cognitive function, providing a scientific window into how God carries out the work of renewing a steadfast spirit within us.
