Isaiah 61:1
“He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted.”
Mental Health Insight
Have you ever noticed a sudden crash in your mood or energy directly after the holidays? It is very common to have a dip in your mood, energy, and even immune function after the major event! This is known in psychology as the Letdown Effect or a Parasympathetic Rebound. The holiday season has our bodies operating on a heightened level, with stress hormones pumping throughout our body. These hormones keep us energized, focused, and moving in order to fully prepare for the holiday festivities! However, after the event is over, our brain registers that the high demands are over, causing the nervous system to abruptly shift gears. This sudden drop can cause one to feel unusually sad, agitated, fatigued, or even a little ill! The brain registers this sudden drop in emotions as mimicked feelings of depression or sadness, despite the even being a very positive one.
Faith Connection
The day after Easter can feel like a spiritual crash. After experiencing such an emotional and spiritual high after reflecting and dedicating significant time to the death and resurrection of Christ it can be difficult getting back in the groove of our normal daily life. However, Isaiah 61:1 helps paint a beautiful picture of Christ’s character in these moments. Knowing that He “binds up” the brokenhearted and every emotional low we experience, fosters a scene of safety in the arms of our Holy Father. God doesn’t demand constant spiritual and emotional highs, and expects us to find rest after these big events. Knowing He created our bodies He understands the biological limitations and acts as a gentle medic when our energy crashes, offering a safe place to simply rest and recover.
Reflection Question
Are you experiencing the physical or emotional “letdown effect” today after the busy holiday weekend? How can we view this as a normal emotional “rest” rather than a spiritual let down?
Prayer
Dear God, after the joy and activity of yesterday, I confess that I feel depleted today. My body and my mind are exhausted, and I feel the heaviness of returning to normal life. Thank You that You do not demand a constant state of high energy from me. Thank You for being the God who tenderly binds up the weary and the brokenhearted. Help me to receive Your rest today without guilt. Amen.

Jesus reading Isaiah 61 is one of my favorite scenes in the Gospels.
Amen brother! Good to see you commenting again
I appreciate this post cause I never really knew how to explain or pray to God about these issues but now I understand how to go about saying it . Thanks to the prayer you added
Yesterday my body got really sick and weak and I was sick to my stomach. I didn’t get to go to church just watched it online on tv at home. Today I’ve been resting and feeling ill, I do feel let down and depleted I am kinda sad bc all though we didn’t celebrate huge we did a 7 day Bible study everyday of the weak til Easter Sunday reading it and the Holy story and resurrection it was absolutely amazing! I enjoyed it so much and it touched my and my husband’s heart just rereading it first hand and taking it all in. Now we have to wait to find another holiday to do a beautiful story devotional with it. So that’s my let down but I am very thankful and blessed.
I have found scheduling rest each day to be so important as I continue to heal from the trauma of the last 2 years of my dip in mental health. I now “allow” myself to rest for a set amount of time (more if needed) every day. It has been so healing to my mind and body as a busy, healing wife and mom and as I go through exposure therapy.
