Devotional

Isaiah 32:17
“The fruit of righteousness will be peace.”

Mental Health Insight – Resilience is a frequently discussed topic in psychology. Resilience is known as the ability to bounce back after an overwhelming, difficult, or even traumatic event. However, a lesser known topic discussed in psychology is Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). Post Traumatic Growth is where someone not only bounces back after a trial, but actually progresses forward in their life. This evidence based fact shows that significant hardships are not the end of one’s life, but can actually be the moment of great shift. These hardships can often result in a deeper appreciation for life, a shift in core values, and a profound sense of internal peace.

Faith Connection – The Easter story is the ultimate redemption story. Good Friday was a traumatic and dark time for the disciples. They were full of pain, grief, and unimaginable trauma. However, instead of rewinding the story God catapulted it forward, creating an even better path that no one anticipated would occur through such trauma. Christ’s resurrection brought something entirely new, ultimately stronger, and forever secured. Isaiah 32:17 is a reminder that the “fruit” does not occur overnight, but rather takes perseverance and time. We can find peace knowing that our darkest moments are far from our end, but only a moment of pain when we look at the eternal gift given to us through the glorious gift through Christ.

Reflection Question: When you look back at a past season of grief, anxiety, or deep struggle, what fruit of peace, strength, or empathy did God grow in you because of that hardship?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, today I celebrate the miracle of the empty tomb. Thank You that You are a God who brings life out of death and peace out of pain. When I am sitting in the middle of a dark season, remind my heart of the hope of Easter Sunday. I trust that You are working in the background, using the heavy soil of my current struggles to grow a deep and lasting fruit of peace in my life. Amen.

  1. I love this! I have found that after a particularly dark time in mg mental health journey, God used it to draw me closer and tell me what I needed to do. As a result, I found my calling and am excelling past where I was before this dark season!

  2. My latest struggle God has helped me strengthen my faith. I had to rely on him solely and my faith was rewarded and strengthened because of it. I’m very thankful for the peace he filled my heart with! Once I gave it all to God my burden felt easier and I could finally breathe and trust God that it would all be handled- and guess what?! He did!!! It was a complete miracle! We were about to be homeless, we even tried a small camper but it didn’t work out, out of the complete Blue did God provide us with a BRAND NEW home! Our new home! Never even lived in! I’m so grateful! God can do the impossible!!!
