Devotional

 Psalm 138:8
“The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me.”

Mental Health Insight – As human beings, we often create timelines for when we expect to reach and achieve certain goals or how our lives should unfold. However, when certain trauma happens such as a miscarriage, financial hardships, medical complications, loss of a loved one, etc. this timeline is shattered. When this timeline is interrupted one can become overwhelmed and anxious, confusing the brain into thinking this life detour is a permanent loss. A way to combat this is Narrative Therapy, which is where therapists help individuals realize that a timeline disruption does not equal a ruined life. Healing begins when we stop trying to force our lives back into the old path, and instead learn to integrate the unexpected plot twist into a new, meaningful narrative.

Faith Connection – Reread Psalm 138:8. Notice the psalmist does not say, “You must hustle to fulfill your purpose on your exact timeline.”. Instead it focuses on relying on the Lord To fulfil His purpose within our lives. We can plan out everyday, down to the minute and life will still not pan out the way we want it to. Why? Because we do not have the same control over our life the way the Lord does. From a biblical worldview, a disruption in your expected timeline is never a disruption to God’s sovereign purpose. We can find peace in knowing that God is writing our story, and His promises for my life are far greater than I could ever imagine or create for myself. You don’t have to figure out how life’s obstacles will be resolved. You simply have to trust the God who promises to bring His good work in you to completion.

Reflection Question: How does shifting the responsibility of your future from your own shoulders to God’s hands change how you view your current life timeline?

Prayer: Dear God, I confess that I am grieving the timeline and the story I thought I was going to have. When my life went off-script, I panicked and felt like my purpose was lost. Thank You for the promise that You are the one who fulfills Your purpose for me. Take the heavy pen out of my hands. I surrender my need to control the timeline, and I trust You to write a beautiful, redemptive story out of this unexpected chapter. Amen.

    1. Paulette I get so excited when I see your comments because I know you’ve been here since the beginning! You go sister! Thank you for the support and I am so proud of you!

  2. I used to think I had to plan everything. I am one of the select few who prob don’t have “goals” I’d like certain things to happen but I kind of just go from day to day. There was a point of time that several days hit me all at once. I find myself resting in his embrace now and I don’t have to worry about too much anxiety or stresses that have not even occurred yet. During my most recent miscarriages I held on to God for Hope. His plans are not my plans and I’m so thankful his plans are better than I hoped or dreamed of!
