Devotional
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety
Mental Health Insight – A healthy sleep routine is the foundation of mental and emotional well-being. When our sleep schedule is disrupted and we do need to meet the minimum hours needed, regulating our emotions, stress levels, anxiety and depression becomes significantly more difficult. Learning and prioritizing how to develop a solid healthy sleep routine is known as sleep hygiene in the field of psychology.
If you find yourself struggling to wind down, integrating a few of these coping skills and habits may be helpful:
Establish a Consistent Rhythm: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day (even on weekends) helps regulate your body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm).
Create a Buffer Zone: Limit exposure to the blue light of phones, tablets, and televisions at least 30 to 60 minutes before bed. Blue light can trick your brain into thinking it is still daytime, suppressing the production of melatonin, the sleep hormone.
Curate a Restful Environment: Make your bedroom a sanctuary for rest. Keep the room cool, dark, and quiet.
Mind Your Input: Avoid caffeine in the late afternoon and evening, and try to limit engaging with highly stimulating or stressful content (like the news or difficult emails) right before bed.
Faith Connection – God created our bodies in His image but it is important to remember we have limitations. Through scripture we can continuously see God Himself prioritizing rest. This world operates trying to grab your attention at any chance it can get. However, instead of falling into the loop of endless distractions, we can take a moment to honor God by actively prioritizing rest. So much healing, reflection, and connections can be made when we choose to slow down and find true rest. And by actively choosing to rest we are telling God “Lord, there is no more I can today, and now I am trusting You to watch over my life while I rest.”
Reflection Question: What is one small change you can make to your evening routine tonight to help transition your mind and body from the busyness of the day into a posture of peaceful rest?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of rest. You know the thoughts that race through my mind and the anxieties that try to steal my peace when the lights go out. Help me to surrender my worries to You at the end of each day. Guide me in building healthy rhythms that honor the body You have given me. As I lie down tonight, quiet my mind, settle my nervous system, and grant me the restorative sleep I need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
