Devotional
Isaiah 26:12
“Lord, you establish peace for us.”
Mental Health Insight – Anxiety and depression often causes one’s brain to get stuck in negative loops that only continue to bring one down. Engaging in reading material that provides positivity, motivation, or spiritual connection helps to interrupt these loops. The field of neurotheology, consistently meditating on spiritual text strengthens the prefrontal cortex AKA the logical part of the brain. The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain responsible for emotional regulation, focus, and empathy. Additionally, this focused reading also helps slow down the amygdala.
Faith Connection – Sometimes God uses His word (scripture) to help slow down our brains. This act of slowing down to read scripture physically and spiritually establishes the “peace for us” that we are so desperately craving. By opening your bible, you are actively choosing to interrupt the anxiety running on repeat within your brain. So by reading your Bible you’re not just practicing spiritual discipline, you are actively choosing to take care of your mental well-being.
Reflection Question: When you notice your mind spiraling into stressful thoughts, how can you use the physical act of reading a Bible verse to interrupt that loop today?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for giving me Your Word as an anchor. When my thoughts are racing and anxiety takes over, give me the desire to open the Bible. Use the act of reading Your promises to interrupt my worries, quiet my mind, and establish Your peace within me. Amen
