Mental Health Insight

Digital Detoxes are a big buzz word in 2026. With a world where information is so easily accessible, many individuals feel as if life has become overstimulating and lost the feeling of nostalgia. Taking a Digital Detox is where individuals will take a break from screens for a dopamine reset. Every time we catch ourselves scrolling throughout social media, receive constant notifications, or utilize easy access to information our brain releases a tiny hit of dopamine, which makes us want to keep scrolling. As time goes on, our brain becomes exhausted by the constant stream of information. Our nervous system was not designed to process the high extent of information we receive today. In a matter of seconds we can learn what and where all the horrible things are going on in the world. This ongoing cycle of endless information keeps our brains on low-level alert, resulting in a rise of stress hormones making it harder to concentrate, focus, sleep or simply sit still. Doing a Digital Detox gives our brain the rest it so desperately needs, allowing your nervous system to return to a calm, steady baseline.

Faith Connection

Whenever we feel bored, stressed or anxious it is easy to turn to our phones to numb the discomfort. However, social media is designed to keep us scrolling, becoming an endless distraction that can easily drown out the small voice of God. Today’s verse shows that human beings have always struggled with distractions that have the potential to separate us from God. We have the opportunity to turn our eye away from empty fleeting distractions and back onto our Heavenly Father. Putting our phones away in the other room for a few hours is not just a healthy mental health habit. In fact you are actively making a choice to step away from the loud, busy world and into the presence of God. When you disconnect from the endless noise of the internet, you create a quiet room in your heart where you can actually hear God speak, process your true feelings, and experience His peace.

Reflection Question

When you feel stressed or bored today what is the very first thing you usually reach for? What would it look like to leave your phone in another room for just thirty minutes today to give your mind a quiet break?

Prayer

Dear God, I confess that I often spend too much time staring at screens and filling my mind with noise. It leaves me feeling distracted and exhausted. Please help me to turn my eyes away from empty scrolling. Give me the courage to put my phone down today so I can make quiet space for You. Help my busy mind find true rest in Your presence. Amen.
