Devotional

 Hebrews 10:24–25
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Today’s devotional will be an educational review of the The “Red Light, Green Light” Exercise. The purpose of this exercise is to simplify and understand each partner within the relationship’s current emotional needs and head space. It provides the opportunity for a deeper understanding and connection in a way that is simplified. Let’s explore it together.

The “Red Light, Green Light” Exercise

Step 1: The Status Check

First ask one another: “What color is your heart today?”

  • Green: I feel connected and at peace.
  • Yellow: I’m feeling a bit lonely or stressed.
  • Red: I’m hurting, feeling rebellious, or withdrawing.

Step 2: The “One-Sentence” Support

The person who is Yellow or Red completes this one sentence:

“Because I’m [Color], I need [one simple thing] from you today.”

Examples of “One Simple Thing”:

  • “…a 20-second hug.”
  • “…to not talk about the budget tonight.”
  • “…for you to pray out loud for me for one minute.”

Step 3: The Response

The other person simply says: “I can do that for you.”

This simple exercise addresses emotional needs simply and effectively. It is easy for life to become chaotic and overbearing, so finding simple ways to connect and build each other up is a perfect way to honor and apply Hebrews 10:24–25 within our lives and relationships.

Prayer Dear God, help us to consider one another and find ways to spur each other toward love. When we feel like withdrawing, give us the strength to keep meeting together and the heart to encourage one another every day. Amen

Book Recommendations: I have received a few inquiries from individuals asking to get more information surrounding the devotional topics! If you are interested in learning more about today’s topic I have a great book recommendation below.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 : Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves

Description: This book provides a practical guide to increasing your self-awareness and social awareness, which are the foundations of the “Status Check” in your exercise. The authors explain how identifying your emotional state (your “color”) allows you to manage your responses rather than reacting impulsively. It offers specific strategies for communicating your needs clearly and responding to others with empathy. By mastering these small “one-sentence” interactions, you can prevent emotional withdrawal and stay connected to your community. This scientific approach to “considering one another” helps build the emotional resilience needed to keep encouraging those around you, just as Hebrews suggests.
