Devotional For Those Feeling Helpless

 Hebrews 13:6
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.”

Mental Health Insight – Did you know there is a phenomenon in psychology known as Learned Helplessness? This was discovered by Dr. Martin Seligman, and is developed when an individual faces repeated, unavoidable stress or trauma and eventually comes to believe they have zero control over their circumstances. Their brain becomes programmed to believe even if there is a way out, the brain has learned to be “helpless” and become frozen, stuck, or even paralyzed by depression.

The great news is that although our brain has learned to be helpless, it can also learn to feel confident in oneself again! The way to combat Learned Helplessness is to restore oneself’s sense of Agency. By helping one believe that your actions matter, the brain begins to believe that these actions are a Secure Resource. The brain slowly starts to recognize that you are no longer stranded and there are available tools and resources that can help one overcome the situation they are facing. This shifts the brain out of the “freeze” trauma response and back into a state of hope and problem resolution.

Faith Connection – After having a season full of difficulties, high stress, grief, or mental hardships it can be easy to slip into a state of spiritual helplessness. We can start to believe things will always be hard and that the valley will never end. But I have the coolest fact for you all!

Hebrew 13:6 says “The Lord is my helper..”. In the original Greek, the word used for helper is boēthos, which actually translates to “one who runs to the cry of those in danger.” From a biblical perspective, you are NEVER without any resources. The helplessness one’s brain tries to believe is a lie of the enemy! The Holy Father is waiting to hear you call His name so He can run to His child. You do not have to face these battles on your own, and the burden that you carry can be given to the Lord, turning that helplessness into Hope throughout our Father.

9 Tips to Combat Feeling Lost As A Christian

1. Vocalize Your Cry for Help The Greek word Boēthos means one who runs to a cry. When you are stuck in a trauma “freeze” response, simply speaking out loud can help break the mental paralysis. You do not need a perfect prayer; just speaking the words “God, I need You” shifts your brain from isolation into seeking a secure connection.

2. Complete One Tiny Task Learned helplessness tricks you into thinking nothing you do matters. You can rebuild your sense of agency through micro-wins. Pick one incredibly small thing you can control today, such as making your bed, drinking a glass of water, or organizing a single drawer. This provides immediate, physical proof to your brain that your actions still carry weight.

3. Challenge “Always” and “Never” Thinking When we feel stuck, our brains start using extreme words. We think, “Things will never get better,” or “I will always feel this way.” In psychology, this is called cognitive distortion. When you catch yourself using these words, actively correct them. Remind yourself that seasons change and God’s mercies are entirely new every morning.

4. Move Your Body to Unfreeze High stress literally traps energy in your nervous system, making you feel physically glued to your current situation. Gently moving your body like taking a short walk outside or doing a few stretches, sends a biological safety signal to your brain. It proves you are not trapped and physically moves you out of the freeze response.

5. Look for the “Helpers” God often answers our cries by sending people. If you are waiting for a burning bush, you might miss the friend, counselor, or neighbor God placed right in front of you. Reaching out to a trusted person builds what psychology calls “co-regulation,” where borrowing someone else’s calm helps steady your own nervous system.

6. Change Your Physical View Sitting in the exact same spot where you usually worry actually reinforces the feeling of being stuck. Environmental cues heavily influence learned helplessness. Simply moving to a different room, sitting on your porch, or going to a park helps your brain reset and opens your mind to new, hopeful perspectives.

7. Build an Evidence Log Your brain has a negative bias when it is stressed, easily forgetting all the times you actually survived hard things. Start writing down small answered prayers or moments of unexpected provision. This creates a tangible “secure resource” file in your mind, proving with evidence that God has not abandoned you.

8. Limit Overwhelming Inputs If you already feel completely out of control, consuming heavy news or endless social media will only deepen your sense of helplessness. Protect your mind. Turning off your screens for a few hours removes unnecessary stress triggers and creates the quiet space needed to hear your Helper’s voice.

9. Breathe Into the Pause When you feel panicked or paralyzed, your breathing becomes short and shallow. Taking slow, deep breaths physically forces your nervous system to down-regulate and turn off its internal alarm bells. Every deep breath is a physical reminder that you are safe in the hands of the One who rushed to your side.

Reflection Question: In what specific area of your life have you fallen into “learned helplessness,” feeling like nothing you do will ever change the outcome? How does visualizing God running toward your cry for help change your willingness to take one small step forward today?

Prayer: Dear God, I confess that there are areas of my life where I have simply given up. The repeated stress and disappointment have made me feel helpless and paralyzed. Forgive me for believing the lie that I am completely on my own. Thank You for being my Boēthos—the One who runs to my cry. Please restore my hope today. Help me to break free from the paralysis of fear, knowing that with You as my Helper, I have the ultimate resource. Amen.
