3 Biblical Ways to Manage Burnout as a Christian

Have you ever wondered what Biblical ways to help with burnout? Burnout is more than just being “tired”. It’s our brain telling us it is in desperate need of a break. Christian burnout is not often talked about as we are often times expected to keep going no matter what. However, it is important to remember how much God emphasized the importance of rest. Today, we will be learning what burnout looks like and how to manage burnout as a Christian

What Does Burnout Look Like?

Psalm 127:2 “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.”

Have you ever been so tired that not even a nap seems to help? Do you ever dread doing even the simplest of tasks at work, school, or even at church? Burnout is a real issue that many people do not know how to recognize. Clinical burnout is more than needing a nap. Burnout is when the body’s stress response system has been running on “E” for too long. When our body has been running nonstop without the important rest it needs our brain will eventually start to view our to-do list as a serious threat. This can cause physical and mental exhaustion, poor mood, and lack of motivation. We can start to be less empathetic and more irritated in ways that are out of character for ourselves. Burnout doesn’t just mean you need a break, it’s your brain saying you need a system reboot to get back to your normal self.

Biblical Ways to Help Burnout

Here are three unique ways to hit the reset button without adding to your to-do list:

  • Take an “Elijah Nap” (1 Kings 19): When the prophet Elijah was completely burnt out, God didn’t give him a sermon. Instead, He gave him a nap and a meal. Treat resting today as holy obedience, not a spiritual failure.
  • Practice “Holy Detachment”: Jesus regularly walked away from crowds who still needed Him so He could rest. Pick one problem today to intentionally leave unsolved and remind yourself: “Jesus is the Savior, and I am not.”
  • Shrink Your “Quiet Time”: When you’re exhausted, a long Bible study feels like another heavy chore. Drop the expectation. Instead, just exhale and say, “Lord, I give you my exhaustion” every time you wash your hands today.

A Christian Perspective on Burnout

Hussle culture is often praised in today’s society, but in Psalm 127:2 it is called Vanity. When we are going nonstop, we are not putting our faith in Christ but rather relying on ourselves to be the ultimate provider. God never wanted us to do it all or to try and fix everything. It’s why we see in the Old Testament Jethro told his son-in-law Moses to delegate his responsivities. We cannot do it all. We cannot keep going if we are running on empty. And we cannot give our full selves to God if we have ran our well dry. God designed us to not be able to do it all. If He did, well when would we need Him? Psalm 127:2 shows us that rest is a beautiful gift from God, not a luxury. Taking time to rest in the middle of the chaos is a radical statement of faith. It is declaring that God is in control, and you trust Him with the outcome. So today, how will you trust God in the middle of this season of burnout?


11 Reflection Questions to Check for Burnout

If you aren’t sure if you are just tired or truly burnt out, explore these questions to check in with your nervous system.

1) Are you waking up feeling exhausted even after getting a full night of sleep?

2) Do you feel a sense of dread when you look at your daily schedule or to do list?

3) Are you easily irritated by small inconveniences that usually would not bother you?

4) Have you stopped enjoying the hobbies or activities that used to bring your life?

5) Do you feel like you have to constantly hustle just to earn your right to rest?

6) Are you withdrawing from friends or family because socializing feels like too much work?

7) Does it feel like your prayers are empty because your mind is completely drained?

8) Are you becoming pessimistic or detached toward the people you normally love to serve?

9) Do you feel a constant physical tightness in your chest neck or shoulders ?

10) Are you struggling to believe that God is in control of the things you cannot manage?

11) Are you finding it difficult to concentrate or remember simple details because your brain feels completely foggy?


Prayer

Dear God, I confess I’ve been trying to carry the weight of my world alone. I am weary from the hustle and my body feels the toll of my stress. Thank You for the gift of limits and the permission to rest. Help me trust that You are working even when I am sleeping. I trade my toiling for Your peace today. Amen.

  1. All of those apply to me except 10. And I just thought it meant I was depressed. I’m usually anti social and pretty sure I have autism but how do you know your in burnout and not depression?

  2. I schedule rest into my schedule daily. Grant it, right now, I am still a SAHM, so that may change some as I spend more time in classes and eventually working once my degree is completed.
    One way someone with a busy life can practice spiritual rest is to set aside a “Sabbath.” This should be a day where no “work” is done and the only goal is to rest in God’s peace.
    Also, taking a sabbatical is something that can greatly help. Schedule time off and spend it away either alone or with your family, but tell them that this is your time of rest.

    Side note: I am praying for you as you make a decision to continue or not. Let God guide you and take some time to rest in Him.

  3. Rest is something that is counter culture! What a good Father we have that He wants us to have this!

  4. Oh, this was so inviting to read. I have definitely been a burnout at times. I get so mad at myself because of it too!
    I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Small Cell Lung Cancer a year and half ago and will be continuing with treatments every other Thursday for the rest of my life. This has definitely put a damper on so many things that I used to do and try to continue to do.
    I have always went to church over the years and read the Bible but never really understood it. So since this diagnosis I have been wanting to get closer to the Lord and learn and understand the word. I have joined many groups online and also am following the Heart Dive 365. I have already learned so much and it is very rewarding.
    But when I have treatments I definitely get burned out and have to fight myself to stay in the word daily.
