If you have ever wondered about the true benefits of giving, bible study combined with modern neuroscience reveals an amazing truth: our brains actually thrive off generosity. When exploring the mental health benefits of giving, bible verses like Ephesians 2:10 remind us that we are beautifully wired by God to do good works. Ultimately, to fully experience these physical and spiritual benefits of giving, bible truths must be put into action. Let’s dive into today’s devotional and learn about the benefits of generosity as a Christian!
The Power of Giving as a Christian
Ephesians 2:10
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.”
Mental Health Insight – Did you know your brain is programmed to thrive off generosity? When we are generous with others, the reward system part of our brain (mesolimbic pathway) is activated. This causes our body to be pumped full of our happy hormones including oxytocin and endorphins. What does this mean? Your brain rewards you for doing good!
Faith Connection – As scientists continue to get a deeper understanding of the brain, the more we can understand how scripture is guiding us to operate in God’s perfect design. Scripture repeatedly talks about the importance of giving to those around us and especially to those in need. Mankind has known that it feels good to do good. Scripture has also been teaching us the same thing. And now, science further proves the benefits of giving that God has been trying to teach us all along! As we align more with God’s perfect design for our lives, we can tap into the many blessing and gifts He has already laid out for us to receive.

- Assume the best: Give someone the benefit of the doubt instead of jumping to a negative conclusion.
- Run an errand: Pick up groceries or medicine for someone you know who is sick or homebound.
- Share your umbrella: Walk someone to their car if it’s raining and you have an umbrella but they don’t.
- Smile warmly: Give the simple, free gift of a joyful, welcoming smile to everyone you pass to trigger those healthy brain rewards!
Reflection Question: What are some small ways you can be more generous today? How can leaning into the way God designed you actually improve your mental health?
Prayer Dear God, thank You for the incredible way You have wired my heart and mind. I am amazed that You designed my very body to find joy and peace through giving to others. Help me to see the opportunities You have placed in my path today to be a blessing. As I step out in faith to do the ‘good works’ You created me for, I pray that my mind would be refreshed and my spirit would be filled with Your joy. Thank You for the gift of being part of Your masterpiece. Amen.
