Today, we will be learning how to set boundaries as a Christian by learning how to slow down before we answer. Learning faith based coping skills do not have to be difficult. Setting boundaries can help take the weight off our shoulders and improve our over relationship with Christ. So, let’s get started!

Faith Based Coping Skill: The “Pause and Pivot”

Matthew 5:37 “All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”

Have you ever panicked and said yes before you even had a chance to think? People-please can cause us to make commitments before we even realize what we are doing. To break this habit, one can practice the Pause and Pivot by following these steps:

Step 1: Pause and take a deep breath to calm your nervous system the moment someone makes a request.

Step 2: Pivot by saying, “Let me check my schedule and get back to you,” which buys your brain time to process.

Step 3: Reflect on your energy levels in private before giving your final, honest answer. This allows your brain to make the most honest decision without the influence of others.

Reflection Question

Who in your life is the hardest person to say no to and how can you practice the pause and pivot with them this week?

Prayer

Dear God, I confess that I often say yes when I really need to say no because I am afraid of disappointing others. Thank You for the permission to speak honestly, clearly, and simply. Help me to practice pausing today so I can protect my peace and honor the limits You have given me. Amen.

  1. Both me and my husband have a problem with this. We will say yes but now we are trying to check our calendars first and thoughtfully make a decision together so we don’t have to cancel on others, appointments or plans already in motion.
