Psalm 36:7
“How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!”
Mental Health Insight – We all want to build and create strong loving relationships. However, building the relationship in a way that doesn’t feel transnational can be difficult at times. In psychotherapy relationship education, the “Emotional Bank Account” tool is a way to build trust and belonging within one’s relationship. Oftentimes, this is utilized as a way to move out of the “I do, now you do” feeling within a relationship and into “I do because I appreciate you”.
The Practice (Psalm 36:7): Mirroring the “priceless love” of God within one’s relationship by using this 3-step script to affirm someone in within one’s life:
- Observe a Specific Action: “I noticed when you…”
- Highlight a Character Trait: “…it showed me your [kindness/strength/patience].”
- Affirm Their Value: “I want you to know how much I value having you in my life.”
Example: ‘I really appreciated when you listened to me vent today; it showed me your patience. You are priceless to me.”
Faith Connection – Mirroring the love of God by adding to someone’s Emotional Bank Account is priceless. God never views loving His children as a heavy task or chore list. But rather, He continuously delights in loving us deeply each and every day. Showing the love that God radiates for us not only heals others in our lives, but deepens the relationship ultimately blessing us back. No relationship is perfect, but thank goodness we have a Perfect Father, teaching us how to love one another each and every day.
Reflection Questions: Who in your life currently feels like they are “running on empty”? How could a specific word of appreciation refill their sense of belonging?
Prayer Dear God, Thank You for the priceless gift of Your love. Help me to be a person who notices the gold in others. When I communicate today, let my words build a bridge of belonging and a refuge of peace. May I see the people in my life not for what they do for me, but for the priceless value You have placed within them. Amen
