Devotional
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Mental Health Insight – Feeling burnt out doesn’t mean you’re failing. It just means your body and nervous system is overwhelmed and needs a break. Jesus repeatedly calls us to come to Him. In order to thrive our body needs to feel safe, connected, and rested. So let’s do a quick nervous system rest!
Step One
Find a comfortable position and gently turn your attention toward God. As you breathe in through your nose for four seconds, invite His presence. As you slowly exhale through your mouth for six to eight seconds, imagine releasing tension from your body. With each breath out, allow your heart and nervous system to settle, trusting that you are safe in His care.
Step Two
Begin to name what you are carrying. Silently or out loud, pray, “Lord, right now I am carrying…” and allow your worries, responsibilities, emotions, and fatigue to come before Him without judgment. Offer each burden to God, trusting that He welcomes your honesty and is strong enough to hold what you release.
Step Three
Place a hand over your heart as a reminder of God’s nearness. Slowly repeat in prayer, “Lord, I receive Your rest,” and “I do not have to carry this alone.” Visualize placing every burden into God’s hands and resting in His presence. Allow His peace to settle over your mind and body, trusting that renewal comes through surrender, not striving.
Reflection Question: What would change in my mental health if I responded to weariness with rest instead of resistance?
Prayer: Dear God, I bring You my weariness and all the burdens I carry. Help me to lay them in Your hands and rest in Your presence. Renew my mind, calm my heart, and restore my strength. Teach me to trust that Your rest is enough and that I do not have to carry this alone. Amen.
Further Resources
Many of you have been asking for further resources that could potentially benefit you on your mental health journey. Below I have attached a book you might find beneficial surrounding this topic.
Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity: Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith
Description: Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a board certified internal medicine physician, explains that many people remain weary because they only focus on physical sleep while neglecting other essential types of rest. She identifies seven different types of rest—including emotional, mental, and spiritual—that are necessary to fully reset an overwhelmed nervous system. This book provides a scientific and biblical framework for understanding why we feel burdened even after a full night’s sleep. By learning how to identify which specific area of your life is “leaking” energy, you can move toward the intentional rest Jesus offers. It serves as a guide for anyone who wants to stop the cycle of burnout and learn the art of finding true sanctuary in God’s presence.

This Bible verse is very close to my heart. I lost my big sister/best friend unexpectedly after she battled with addiction. This verse kept coming to me, and then I later found she wrote it in her journal. Great blog! Very informative!!!
