Devotional
Isaiah 40:31
“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.”
Mental Health Insight – Did you know burnout makes you less productive, focused, and emotionally regulated? When we push ourselves too hard without the adequate amount of rest our body needs it goes into survival mode, putting our body into a state of stress. This causes our work to be less efficient, our temper to be short fussed, and our anxiety to be through the roof! The good news is taking short moments of intentional rest can help rejuvenate our body, reducing the adverse effects of stress! Short periods of intentional rest, slow breathing, or prayer activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering cortisol and restoring cognitive function.
Faith Connection: There are so many areas throughout scripture that we see God talking about the renewal of the mind, spirit, and body. However, the only way to be renewed is to rest! So often I see Christians working so hard, but quickly becoming burnt out. But let’s think about it! If our Heavenly Father rested on the 7th day and was admitted about practicing the Sabbath, we should make it a priority! Why? Because we cannot expect renewal if we don’t give God the opportunity to do so.
Reflection Question: In what areas of my life am I pushing myself without giving my body or mind adequate rest?
Prayer: Dear God, I come to You tired and in need of renewal. Help me release the pressure to constantly perform and remind me that rest is part of Your design, not a failure on my part. Calm my anxious thoughts, settle my body, and restore what stress has worn down. Teach me to trust You enough to pause, to breathe, and to receive the strength only You can give. As I rest in You, renew my mind, my spirit, and my energy for what lies ahead. Amen.
Further Resources
Many of you have been asking for further resources that could potentially benefit you on your mental health journey. Below I have attached a book you might find beneficial surrounding this topic.
The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: John Mark Comer
Description: John Mark Comer addresses the “hurry sickness” of modern life, explaining how a constant state of busyness keeps the body in a permanent stress response. He details how this pace of life erodes our emotional health and spiritual connection, leading to the exact burnout you described. By looking at the life of Jesus, Comer presents a compelling case for the practice of “Sabbath” and intentional rest as the only way to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and find true renewal. This book provides a practical roadmap for eliminating the noise and hurry that drain our strength, showing that we must slow down to the pace of our souls to experience the “renewed strength” promised in Isaiah.
