Devotional
Jeremiah 29:11
“For I know the plans I have for you… plans to give you hope and a future.”
Mental Health Insight – Ever noticed how when thinking about the future our brain flips between optimism to terror? When anxiety and depression start to consume our mind, the logical part (Prefrontal Cortex) of the brain is hijacked by the emotional part (Amygdala). Our amygdala can take any plans that we have for the future and turn them into our worst nightmare. So, let’s learn how to reconnect with a healthier and well-grounded image of your future.
Step One:. Identify one specific future event or “what if” that is currently causing you to feel anxious or uncertain.
Step Two: Even if the worst-case scenario happened, what resources, people, or past experiences could you lean on to get through it? Remind yourself that God is already in that tomorrow, waiting to help.
Step Three: Look at how your current state of mind is exaggerating the threat. Ask yourself if this situation is actually 100 percent hopeless, or if your anxiety is just making it feel that way.
Faith Connection – God created our brains to be a powerful tool to protect ourselves. Despite this our brains can make up some pretty scary scenarios. Our anxiety and depression can create a future that no one wants to endure. Thankfully, we have God that writes out the steps of our lives, and even in the toughest of moments we are able to rely on Him despite what are brain tries to make up.
Reflection Question: If I take away the scary filter my anxiety has added to this situation, what is the actual, manageable truth of the matter?
Prayer: Dear God, I hand You my what ifs. Thank You for the reminder that You are not just watching my future, You are planning it for my good. Help me to see through the exaggerations of my anxiety and trust in the resilience You’ve built into me. I choose hope over fear today. Amen.

Thanks for the reminder to apply some good old-fashioned CBT to my current more-specific-than-usual worry. My mind always finds a way, though. “You could prevent that altogether if you weren’t so timid and lazy.” No, I can’t, says logic.
Thank you for always reading! I am always so happy to see you and others comment. God bless you brother!
