Grasping the true teach us to number our days meaning isn’t about counting down our remaining time, but instead shifting from survival mode to intentional, daily living. In today’s devotional, we will uncover how applying the teach us to number our days meaning helps you seamlessly trade chronic overwhelm for the specific purpose God has called you to today.

How to Number Your Days

Psalm 90:12
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Mental Health Insight: As much as we desire to do it all, we simply cannot. The endless to do list puts our body into a state of heightened stress, raising cortisol levels and making it harder to stay on task. Having a broad vision with numerous different goals you want to achieve throughout your life can be very overwhelming on a daily basis. If we want to truly be productive and mark off everything on our to-do lists, we must reduce the list. Instead of trying to do it all, starting each day by prioritizing the Big Three, which can help the day feel more grounded and meaningful, is a great way to maintain productivity. Here is how to do it!

Each morning, identify 3 things that would make the day feel meaningful and productive. Make sure to pick things that can be completed in the day easily, so you are not overwhelmed.

The result? By shifting our focus from the never ending to do list, to smaller goals we move out of survival mode and live more intentionally each day.

A Spiritual Framework for the “Big Three”

  • Task 1 (The Hands): Something practical you are called to do (work, cleaning, errands).
  • Task 2 (The Heart): A way you are called to connect (reaching out to a friend, playing with your kids).
  • Task 3 (The Soul): A way you are called to rest or grow (reading a chapter of a book, spending 10 minutes in prayer, taking a walk).

Faith Connection – Numbering our days is not about counting down how many we have left. Rather it is about living each day with intention, asking God to guide us to live each day more fruitfully. God calls us to be proactive, but He also wants us to live a balanced life. We are not able to do it all, so let’s leave that to God. So, for this new season of your life, let’s transition out of the “to do” mindset and into the “called”.

Christian Journal Prompts

If I were to stand before God at the end of this day, which three choices would I be most grateful I made the time for?

How does your current “to-do” list make you feel physically and mentally, and what is one unrealistic expectation you need to give yourself the grace to cross off entirely?

How would your attitude shift if you viewed today’s chores or work tasks as specific, intentional assignments from God?

What are your personal warning signs that you have slipped into survival mode, and how can adopting the “Big Three” method help pull you out of that state?

What is the single most important practical task God is calling you to complete today, and how can you invite the Holy Spirit to give you peace while you do it?

Who in your circle is God quietly prompting you to reach out to today, and what specific, simple action can you take to make them feel seen and loved?

Why do we so often treat soul care, like resting, praying, or taking a quiet walk, as a luxury instead of a necessity?

What actually makes a day feel “meaningful” and productive in God’s eyes?

If you completed only your “Big Three” today and left the rest of the list untouched, could you rest in the peace that your efforts were enough? If not, what fears are keeping you tied to productivity?

What does spiritual wisdom look like for you in this specific season of your life?

Looking ahead to tomorrow, what are your specific Hands, Heart, and Soul goals, and how will you structure your morning to focus on them before the noise of the day takes over?

Prayer

Dear God, thank You for the gift of this new day and the grace of my limitations. Teach me to number my moments so that I may not waste them on worry or the pressure of a never ending to do list. I surrender my schedule to You, moving out of survival mode and into the peace of being called. Grant me a heart of wisdom to focus on the small, meaningful things You have set before me today, trusting that as I remain faithful to these priorities, You are holding everything else in Your hands. Amen.
