Devotional
1 John 4:9–10
“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.”
Mental Health Insight – Why is it so hard for individuals to give themselves a little self compassion at times? Many misunderstand self-compassion as letting one off the hook. However, there is a healthy way in creating and developing grace for oneself. Common Humanity is an emotional resiliency tool used to help one understand that suffering and personal mistakes is a common human experience. By practicing common humanity we stop punishing ourselves for being human, living in a fallen world. But rather allow ourselves to have the same grace and compassion Christ gives us on a daily basis.
Faith Connection – We see in 1 John 4: 9-10 just how much compassion God gives us. He understands that we live in a fallen world. God never expected perfection from us, that is why He sent Christ to die on the cross for you and I. Having self compassion for one’s self is exactly what God gives us each and every day. We cannot expect perfection from ourselves. If we do then what room is left for God? Every day we live our life for Christ, it is a sanctification process. He understands we will stumble and fall but the end goal is to always get back up despite our transgressions. So the same way that Christ rose again, let’s embrace common humanity and rise again despite the hardships and transgressions.
Reflection Questions: Am I holding myself to a standard of ‘perfection’ that God himself doesn’t even hold me to? What is one human limit I’ve been judging myself for that I can choose to meet with kindness today?
Prayer Dear God, thank You for being a compassionate Parent who knows exactly how I am formed. Forgive me for the ways I have been harsh with myself and for demanding that I be more than human. Help me to remember that I am ‘dust’ in Your hands, and that Your grace is sufficient for my weaknesses. Today, I choose to breathe and receive Your kindness. Amen

God Loves Me and I Love Myself!: Overcoming the Resistance to Loving Yourself by Mark DeJesus
Brief Description In this book, Mark DeJesus explores the “modern plague” of self-rejection. He argues that many Christians believe the lie that self-love is inherently selfish or prideful, when in reality, healthy self-love is a prerequisite for fulfilling the command to “love your neighbor as yourself.” The book identifies the spiritual and psychological “resistance” that keeps us stuck in cycles of shame, guilt, and performance-based living.
