Devotional
Isaiah 30:15
“In quietness and trust is your strength.”
Mental Health Insight – Everyone knows the Executive Function part of our brain that is responsible for the high level cognitive functioning, but there is a part of the brain that is not as often discussed. This is known as the Default Mode Network (DMN) which is a part of the brain where mental strength is developed. But what is so great about this part of the brain? Well, scientists have now discovered that when we intentionally sit and slow down to rest the DMN is activated, helping consolidate memories and process complex emotions. Mental strength isn’t about processing things quickly. It’s about slowing down and being able to see the bigger picture. This only happens when the brain is allowed to rest from the loud world around us. So your brain is actually quite busy when it’s quiet. It is just a higher form of mental harmony.
Faith Connection – When we read “trust” in Isaiah 30:15 it is not a passive request, but more so a deliberate action of shifting the mental load. Trusting is the act against the tendency to obsess over unfinished tasks or unresolved problems. So when we are trusting in God, we are closing the book to certain chapters in our brain. God is so adamant about us trusting Him because it creates a safety net in our brain and moves away from our brain remaining in a state of crisis. So allow yourself to be still, and give your nervous system permission to recover.
Reflection Question: When you sit in silence for just one minute today, what is the first thing your heart feels ready to let go of?
Prayer: Lord, I thank You that my value is not found in my productivity. Today, I lean into the strength of quietness. I release the need to solve every problem right now and trust that You are working in the spaces where I am still. Grant my mind true rest and my heart a deep sense of security in Your care. Amen.
