1 Corinthians 9:24
“Run in such a way as to get the prize.”

Mental Health Insight – Discipline is the foundation of every successful habit. As discipline increases, relying on motivation is no longer necessary. Your day to day behaviors become reliant on patterns and structure, rather than emotions itself. This is due to the fact that individuals with higher levels of discipline have stronger prefrontal cortex functioning. Higher prefrontal cortex functioning strengthens emotional regulation, self control, and impulse control is all improved. As a result, one doesn’t need motivation in order to initiate behavior, despite having limited desire no matter the circumstances. Continuing to show up and remain consistent strengthens the prefrontal cortex creating discipline. Each small step will eventually become effortless patterns rather than forced expectation. So, if you are wanting to become more disciplined in life, start small and build your prefrontal cortex.

Faith Connection – When God calls us to become more disciplined He is training us for a bigger goal. Creating discipline in our daily lives isn’t a punishment, it is a necessity in order to live up to every ounce Christ created us to be. God calls us to be ambitious for the Kingdom of God. However,  in order to fully reach these goals we must trust in God to help us shed unhealthy habits and rely on effortless patterns.

Reflection Question: What small, intentional step can I take today to strengthen my discipline and align my daily habits with God’s purpose for my life?

Prayer: Dear God, help me cultivate discipline in my daily life so that my actions reflect Your purpose. Strengthen my mind and heart to rely not on fleeting motivation, but on consistent, intentional patterns that honor You. Teach me to trust You as I build habits that prepare me to fulfill the calling You have placed on my life. Amen.

Further Resources

Many of you have been asking for further resources that could potentially benefit you on your mental health journey. Below I have attached a book you might find beneficial surrounding this topic!

Do It for a Day: How to Make or Break Any Habit in 30 Days Mark Batterson

Description: In Do It for a Day, Mark Batterson provides a practical, 30-day guide to mastering the “physics of habits.” The book is built on the premise that while we cannot always control our circumstances, we can control our daily patterns, which eventually form our destiny. Batterson details how to identify “3M” habits—those that are Measurable, Meaningful, and Maintainable—to bridge the gap between who you are and who God created you to be. By utilizing habit-stacking and habit-switching techniques, the book coaches readers on how to “hack” their own behaviors, making the discipline of showing up a natural, consistent part of their spiritual and daily lives.
