What is Seasonal Affective Disorder? Why does seasonal depression happen? Am I failing as a Christian if I struggle with Seasonal Affective Disorder? Let’s educate ourselves about Seasonal Affective Disorder and science backed tips to help you prepare for this next season.

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

As the seasons change and the days grow shorter, it is incredibly common for an individual’s mood to fluctuate. Many individuals who struggle during the winter months wish that summer could last forever! But why? When our mood shifts with the seasons there is a biological explanation due to our body’s natural response to changing how much sunlight is absorbed in a day.

As Christians, we are often taught to be joyful and rejoice always. However, many with struggle with how we actually feel (groggy, tired, down in our mood) and how we think we should feel (joyful, energetic). Today, we will delve into this clash between the mind and the spirit exploring the facts behind seasonal affective disorder and how God’ grace extends to the fluctuation of neurochemistry.

The Shift in Biology

“If I say, ‘Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,’ even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.” — Psalm 139:11-12

There is a small reign within the brain known as the suprachiasmatic nucleus, which is responsible for regulating our internal clock to the external environment. The suprachiasmatic nucleus helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, which is responsible for regulating the body’s energy levels, mood, and sleep.

With the seasons change so does the amount of light we absorb. Instead of spending more time outside at the beach or on a nice walk, we tend to hide from the cold indoors reducing the overall amount of light the suprachiasmatic nucleus can process. This shift in seasons can disrupt the body internal system.

As our body changes, we must be reminded to give ourselves the grace we deserve. Reducing any emotional shame surrounding this change is essential. When we are able to understand how the brain and body work, it can help with emotional regulation. Allowing one to be more patient with themselves as they understand their body and brains function rather than fighting against it.

Giving Ourselves Grace

“Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, ‘Get up and eat.’ He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.” — 1 Kings 19:5-6

In psychology, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs argues the importance of getting one’s basic needs met in order for one to have the capacity to process higher-level emotions. We see in 1 Kings 19:5-6 advocating for the same thing! Making sure our biology, psychology, and social environments are all supported is essential in an individual operating at their most proficient level in life.

God doesn’t offer Elijah a sermon to fix his thinking. Instead, He addresses Elijah’s physiological baseline: He provides a nap, a warm meal, and water.

If we are struggling to get our basic need met (like sleep, food, natural LIGHT, and safety) our body will have a hard time properly functioning. If our body is having a hard time properly functioning, how much more difficult will it be to for our brain to function adequately!

Challenging the Pain

“Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.” — Ecclesiastes 11:7

There are moments in our lives where we will feel unmotivated, tired, and overwhelmed with the idea of doing anything. However, in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy there is a tool called behavioral activation. The premise of this tool does not allow one to wait until they are motivated to act on something. Instead, behavioral activation calls for one to act first and the feelings of motivation will increase as one progresses forward.

The following tools are educational grounded ways to practice behavioral activation.

Seek Professional Counsel: Consulting a licensed therapist or psychologist is a proactive way to build an emotional toolkit. They can provide evidence-based strategies to navigate cognitive distortions that often accompany a low mood.

Circadian Entrainment: Try to get outside within the first hour of waking up. Natural morning light is critical for signaling the brain to halt melatonin production and sync your internal clock to the day.

Light Therapy: Clinical research heavily supports the use of phototherapy. Sitting near a 10,000-lux light box for 20-30 minutes each morning can simulate the missing sunlight and actively boost mood-regulating neurotransmitters.

Intentional Movement: Gentle, consistent exercise releases endorphins and increases brain plasticity (the brain’s ability to adapt and rewire itself), acting as a natural buffer against seasonal slumps.

No matter how seasons change, we can implement different tools to take actionable steps to support our physical and emotional well-being!

5 Facts About Seasonal Affective Disorder

1: SAD is heavily tied to the body’s internal clock. The decrease in sunlight in winter disrupts one’s circadian rhythm, leading to feelings of lethargy and mood shifts.

2: Studies have shown that people experiencing seasonal mood shifts may have difficulty regulating serotonin (the hormone that uplifts our mood) and may overproduce melatonin (the hormone that regulates sleep), making one feel persistently tired.

3: The prevalence of seasonal mood issues varies heavily depending on where you live. The amount of sunlight one receives in a day, can significantly affect one’s mood.

4: Unlike some other mood fluctuations, seasonal depression is a noticeable pattern. Typically starting in the fall and then resolving itself around spring.

5: Research has shown that phototherapy (light therapy) is a non-invasive tool used to combat the biological effects of reduced sunlight during the winter.

Christian Journal Prompts

1: Have I ever felt guilty or like a “bad Christian” for feeling down or lacking energy during the winter?

2: How can I better honor myself due to the fact that my body and mood can change with the seasons, and it is not because of anything particular that I might have done?

3: When my energy drops this winter, what are three practical, physical acts of grace I can extend to myself (e.g., more sleep, warm meals, a walk outside) instead of just trying to “push through”?

4: How can I prioritize my body’s needs as the season changes?

5: How can I reframe my view of the winter season and invite God into this new phase of life?

Christian Book Recommendations

Whether you are a professional in the mental health realm or a Christian looking for educational material to get a better understanding of your needs, these book recommendations are perfect to further your education around today’s topic!

Are you struggling to learn how to get clients for therapy? Trying to learn how to market yourself in order to understand how to get clients for therapy can be a lot simpler than people anticipate. Today, join me to explore 21 different ways to learn how to get clients for therapy.

How to get Clients for Therapy

Trying to build a case load after deciding to go into private practice can feel scary as you are entering into a new landscape of your career. Luckly, it doesn’t have to be! There are many different avenue one can take to market their practice even if you have ZERO marketing experience!

I personally had to go directly into private practice due to being a military spouse. Lucky, I was able to fill up my case load COMPLETELY on my own in less than 3 months! I don’t believe in gate keeping (as this field has plenty of that already) so I will gladly share some of the tips that helped me fill up quickly.

So, grab yourself a nice cup of coffee and see which ideas you can use to expand your case load!

Getting Out in the Community

There are a lot of local community resources therapist can utilize that often get overlooked. Let’s explore 6 ways you can market yourself within your community.

1. Am I actually talking to people in local Facebook groups?

This first tip is actually one of my greatest assets to filling up my case load. I not only posted in the local town pages, but I also looked at more niche groups as well. For example, I joined the local military group, local therapist/providers groups, mother’s group, local Christian groups, etc. I would also specifically go to the group’s search box and look up key works like (looking for a therapist, anxiety, depression, therapy, etc.) which helped me to comment my information on posts where people were actively searching for a provider.

2. What about the local paper?

It sounds old school, but a well-placed ad in a community newspaper can reach an entirely different demographic that isn’t scrolling online all day. Many therapist who enjoys working with older population have found success in this area. Many local newspapers are also going digital, with many sending these papers directly to people inboxes making it even easier to advertise yourself.

3. Could I do something creative at a local coffee shop?

Have you noticed your local coffee shop having advertising on the sleeve of the coffee cups? Many coffee shops will allow advertising in unique ways! Reach out to your local coffee shop and see what kind of advertising partnerships they have available.

4. Have I connected with the local food banks?

Food banks constantly looking for community resources and sliding-scale providers for the people they serve. Many are even willing to place flyers into food bags with your information if you ask!

5. Am I utilizing the public library?

I have connected with other private pay therapists that have been able to fill up their case load by volunteering at local free events like reading children books at the public library. I have even seen a case where a therapist who only takes on cash pay clients advocate that these free town events like reading books at the public library is the main thing that helped them fill up their case load!

6. Is there a free workshop I could teach around town?

No one likes to work for free! However, hosting a free workshop at the local fire department, ER staff, police station, teachers, etc. is a FANTASTIC way to get connections FAST. These individuals are often carrying a lot of weight serving their community and are looking for a provider or knows someone who is looking. Providing a free educational class about emotional regulation, PTSD, teenage suicide rates, etc. is a great way to not only build trust but a caseload.

Faith-Based Connections

If you offer Christian or biblical counseling, your faith community is one of your absolute BEST assets.

7. Have I introduced myself to local church leaders?

Pastors are often desperate for trusted, licensed professionals to send their congregation to when issues go beyond pastoral care. They cannot do it themselves and many are desperate to find a provider that honors the Christian faith. Schedule a meeting with your local pastors and offer information about your services.

8. Does my own church know I have openings?

The elders within your church or local churches are carrying a lot of emotional weight as well. Don’t just let the pastor know, let the elders know you are providing services as well.

9. Am I talking to local biblical counselors?

There are a lot of division between Biblical Counselors and Licensed Therapist. However, many Biblical Counselors are wanting to connect with local therapist. They understand there are certain things outside of their scope of practice. Creating a mutual relationship by helping each other with referrals can be a fantastic way of finding faith-based clients.

10. Am I listed on faith-specific sites?

Places like Therapy for Christians, Conservative Counselors, or Christian Counselors Network are goldmines if that is your specific niche.

Check out Therapyforchristians.com

check out conservativecounselors.com

check out the christiancounselorsnetwork.com

Professional Networking

Other professionals usually hear about a person’s struggles long before that person ever looks for a therapist. Connecting with local agencies can be a great way to get referrals.

11. Do the local doctors know who I am?

Midwives, pediatricians, holistic health folks, and OBGYNs need therapists on speed dial. I personally brought mental health themed cookies with a bunch of business cards and flyers to local agencies which helped create a steady referral source.

12. Have I reached out to bigger private practices?

A lot of group practices have waitlists and love having a solo practitioner they trust to take their overflow. I have seen providers having MONTHS long waitlist desperate to connect with other providers they trust. Connect with local providers in different niches so they can have an additional referral source when they need it.

13. Are the local school counselors in my network?

They see kids struggling every day and almost always need outside referrals for long-term help. Many schools build specific referral networks and will happily place you on their list and may even contact you to work with the students within their school!

14. What about the local fitness community?

Yoga teachers, Pilates instructors, and boot camp coaches talk to their clients about everything. Mental and physical health are deeply connected. Connecting with these individuals can be a great way to build your case load if you are in this niche.

15. Am I active on local provider pages?

Check Facebook for groups made specifically for healthcare workers in your state or county. Many providers are often posting referrals on a daily basis. Posting your information and niche can be a good way to get a steady stream of clients and even a waitlist!

16. Local Mental Health Resources

You are missing out tremendously if you are not connected with local psychiatry offices and local inpatient centers. They are always needing places to refer individuals.

Your Digital Footprint

When someone hears your name, the first thing they will do is look you up. You need to make sure they like what they see!

17. Am I actually posting useful stuff on social media?

Creating a professional business page can be a great way to build trust with people! Many providers are able to build a cash pay practice solely through social media!

18. Are my standard directories updated?

Make sure your profiles on Psychology Today and Open Path have a warm photo and text that sounds like a real person wrote it. I have seen so many individuals say these websites don’t work for them and with a quick look at their profile I can easily say it is their profile, not the platform. Having a professional looking page is ESSENTIAL and people are statistically more likely to click your page.

Feeling overwhelmed by online directories or struggling to connect with the right clients? We want to help you expand your reach so you can focus on what you do best: helping others. Let us audit your digital presence!

19. Did I claim my Google Business profile?

You want to make sure you actually show up when someone types “therapist near me” into Google Maps. Making sure Google knows you exist is essential!

20. Is it obvious who I help?

When someone reads your stuff online, they should immediately know if you are the right fit for their specific problem. Of course, we want to be able to treat it all. However, zeroing in on a specific niche can not only prevent burn out but can help others know if you guys are a good fit for one another.

21. Do I have a professional website that actually works?

Here is the hard truth: when a doctor or a friend recommends you, that potential client is going straight to your website. If you do not have one, or if it looks outdated and is hard to navigate, they will probably click away before ever making a phone call.

Need help with that last question?

Let’s be real. Your time needs to be spent helping your clients, not fighting with website builders, trying to decode SEO, or stressing over web design.

I help mental health providers design and create beautiful, professional websites. I know exactly what it takes to build a digital home for your practice that looks great, builds immediate trust, and makes it incredibly easy for new clients to book a session.

If you are ready for a website that does the heavy lifting for your marketing, and let’s chat about your practice!

Every time you open an email, leave a comment, or try out one of the coping skills, you are reminding me exactly why God laid this ministry on my heart. Because of you, this space is a safe haven for so many.

Creating these devotionals, free printables, and mental health resources is one of my greatest joys. My goal has always been to keep these tools as accessible as possible. However, as our community grows, so do the costs behind the scenes—from website hosting to the software and design tools I use to create our free Bible studies, therapist resources, and coloring pages.

A few of you have so graciously reached out recently to ask if there is a way to help support the blog financially.

To make that easy, I have set up a secure donation page: [buymeacoffee.com/TLCMH].

If my devotionals have brought you comfort or value, and you feel led to support my work, a donation of any size makes a massive difference. Your financial support goes directly toward covering the monthly costs of running the blog, which allows me to keep creating and sharing these free mental health and faith resources with the people who need them most.

Please hear my heart on this: There is zero pressure to donate. If you are not in a season to give financially, please know that your presence, your prayers, and your willingness to share my posts with your friends are the greatest gifts you could ever give me. This is simply an option for those who have asked for a way to pitch in.

Thank you for being here, for doing the hard work of healing, and for walking this journey with me. I am so incredibly blessed to be in this with you.

Christian Coping Skills

Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”

Our brains are predisposed to scan our environment to focus on the negative. Why? To protect us of course! This amazing feature of our brain has kept us safe for centuries. However, in more recent years with the development of the internet our brains have gotten stuck in a heightened state due to the continual amount of information fed to us daily.

This hyperconnected environment has caused our brain’s survival mechanism to work against us. Our brains are simply not designed to carry the weight of the whole world. The good news is our brains are extremely resilient.

Neuroplastic reminds us that the brain has the power to learn new things and rewire itself! Coping skills are simple tools that anyone can use to help the brain relearn emotional regulation, even if the world seems chaotic.

We can start by setting strict boundaries with social media and news outlets and start engaging our physical senses in our immediate surroundings (focusing only on what we can actually control). By practicing mindfulness, we can signal to our bodies we are safe and not in a state of danger. Grounding allows our nervous system to step out of the “fight or flight” response and help our brains regain the peace and safety it so desires.

In Mark Chapter 4, we can see the disciples and Christ getting caught up in a storm. As fishermen, getting caught in storms I’m sure was nothing new, but from the passage we can tell it absolutely terrified them. They quickly awoke Christ and in the middle of the chaos He calmed the storm within an instant. One single command calmed the utter chaos the disciples feared.

The truth is that Christ’s peace was not reliant on the weather but completely secure and in trust of the Father.

God never calls us to pretend the world isn’t overwhelming and even broken at times. Instead, He calls us to trust in Him. He never called us to carry the weight of the world. Nope! He did just that over 2000s years ago for both you and I.

He only calls us to come and rest in Him. To lean on His ways, not the worlds. So, when the world starts to feel like an overwhelming storm that could swallow you whole let us anchor ourselves in the one who has not only overcome this storm you are facing but has also overcome this world.

As He reminds us in John 16:33, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Our ultimate safety and peace are not found in this world, but in the close presence of the One who created the very world you are walking through today.

Check out the free printable below!

Christian Journal Prompts

What outside “storms” (like the news or social media) are currently stealing your peace? What is one simple boundary you can set today (like turning off notifications) to quiet the noise and reconnect with God?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, the weight of this broken world often feels entirely too heavy for my mind to carry. When my thoughts are overwhelmed by relentless news of conflict, sickness, and global uncertainty, gently pull my focus back to You. Quiet the loud alarm bells in my anxious mind and remind my nervous system that You are still on the throne. Help me to release the vast things I cannot control into Your fully capable hands. Teach me how to stay deeply grounded in Your unshakeable peace today, trusting that You hold the future. Amen.
